Rwanda for first-time visitors

If this is your first trip to Rwanda, here is the big picture: how long to come for, what to prioritize, and how to make the logistics painless.

How many days do you really need?

Most first trips work well in seven to ten days. Seven covers Kigali, gorilla trekking and a rest on Lake Kivu. Ten lets you add Nyungwe or Akagera at a gentler pace. Two weeks fits the whole country with room to breathe.

Build your dates around your gorilla permit if trekking is a priority, since permits are limited and booked through the official RDB portal.

What to prioritize

  • Gorilla trekking at Volcanoes National Park, if it is on your list
  • A rest on Lake Kivu to break up the driving
  • One of Nyungwe (rainforest) or Akagera (savanna), depending on taste
  • A gentle first and last day in Kigali

Make logistics easy

Distances look short on a map but the roads are mountainous, so a private driver is the simplest way to move around. Sort a SIM and some local cash early, and confirm your visa and any permits through official sources.

VisitRwandaBooking.com is an independent travel planning and booking-support site. We are not a government agency, the Rwanda Development Board, a national park, an airline, or a hotel. Permits, visas, park rules and entry requirements must be confirmed with official sources.
